CRETAquarium, in Gournes east of Heraklion, offers a window into the underwater life of the Mediterranean. Its displays introduce visitors to the creatures and habitats found around Crete, providing a chance to observe marine life up close.
Exhibition tanks recreate features of the Cretan and Mediterranean seabeds. Watching each display reveals different behaviours and details, from the movements of larger animals to the smaller inhabitants tucked into their surroundings.
Operated as part of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, the aquarium brings scientific understanding into an engaging visitor experience. Exploring its exhibits offers a deeper appreciation of Mediterranean biodiversity and the seas that surround the island.
