Kapetaniana sits high on the southern slopes of the Asterousia Mountains in Crete’s Heraklion region. Built at approximately 750 metres above sea level, the village enjoys sweeping views of the Libyan Sea, with the prominent summit of Kofinas rising nearby.
Stone houses blend into the rocky terrain, giving the village a distinctive mountain character. The frescoed church of Panagia reflects its religious heritage, while traces of ancient worship around Kofinas reveal the area’s long cultural history.
The village provides a base for exploring both mountain and coast. Trails pass cultivated land and old stone walls on the way towards Kofinas, while the beaches around Agios Ioannis lie below. Take time to admire the scenery or venture farther into this rugged corner of southern Crete.
