Samaria Gorge runs through the White Mountains in Crete’s Chania region, forming part of Samaria National Park. From Xyloskalo near the Omalos Plateau, the trail leads downhill towards the coastal village of Agia Roumeli, revealing a striking transition from mountain scenery to the Libyan Sea.
The gorge’s steep walls create dramatic views throughout the route, particularly at the narrow passage called the Gates. With only a few metres separating the cliffs, this section gives a powerful sense of their height and scale and is one of Samaria’s most recognisable landmarks.
The full walk requires stamina, covering a long distance with a considerable descent. At Agia Roumeli, the shoreline offers a place to pause and recover after the hike. Resting beside the water before departing by boat provides a rewarding finish to the journey.
