Rouvas Gorge, also called Agios Nikolaos Gorge, is situated near Zaros in the Heraklion region, beneath the southern slopes of Mount Psiloritis. Its towering rocks, natural springs and shaded stretches reveal a greener side of Crete’s rugged mountain scenery.

Starting at Zaros Lake, the European E4 walking trail rises through the gorge towards Rouvas Forest. The route passes through narrow rock corridors before reaching wooded areas of oak and cypress, with changing views adding variety to the journey.

After exploring, enjoy a break by Zaros Lake and a meal at one of the nearby tavernas. Local honey, olive oil, aromatic herbs and traditional cheeses bring the flavours of the region to the table, rounding off a day among the gorge and forest.
