Karteros Beach lies just east of Heraklion on Crete’s northern shoreline. Its wide stretch of golden sand and shallow sea attracts both residents and holidaymakers, while the sweeping bay provides an inviting setting for a leisurely coastal walk.
Beach bars and organised sections give the central shore a lively feel, making it easy to spend several hours beside the water. The bay is exposed to northern winds, which can create substantial waves and change the atmosphere of the beach.
Towards the western end, known as Florida, the Karteros River meets the sea after flowing through the gorge inland. The river mouth adds variety to the scenery and gives visitors another part of the coastline to discover.
