Balos Lagoon sits in the northwestern corner of Crete’s Chania region, between the Gramvousa Peninsula and Cape Tigani. Broad sandbanks frame its turquoise shallows, with deeper blue water beyond and rocky hills rising around the coast.
The shoreline combines white sand with soft pink patches created by crushed shell fragments. From the approach path above, the lagoon’s changing colours and curved beaches come into view, revealing how the sand and sea shape this distinctive landscape.
Take time to enjoy the water and admire the rugged headlands surrounding the lagoon. Part of a protected Natura 2000 area, Balos is valued for its natural scenery. Its beauty is striking both from the hillside and at the water’s edge.
